London — a perfect day

A perfect day in Richmond

Start at The Mirror Cafe at 10:00 for coffee in what feels like a proper neighbourhood spot, then head down to Richmond Riverside at 10:56 to drift along the Georgian waterfront and watch the boats. The Richmond Terrace Walk at 12:11 carries you gently uphill past linden trees and sculpture to the Richmond Hill Viewpoint at 13:13, one of the finest Thames panoramas in greater London. Lunch at Cocotte Richmond at 13:53 means rotisserie chicken in a relaxed, lively room, followed by a long afternoon loop through Richmond Park at 15:53 with the deer, ending quietly at Rotary Gardens at 18:08.

Richmond sits at the point where the Thames bends south and the city quietly gives up — Georgian streets, a royal park with actual deer, and a riverside that invites you to slow down rather than tick things off. This day follows the natural shape of the place: coffee in the village, a drift down to the water, a climb to the famous viewpoint, then a long unhurried afternoon in the park. Broken cloud at 22°C is about as good as Richmond gets.

Worth knowing

Richmond Park's main gates close at dusk, which in summer is well after 20:00, but check the seasonal closing time if you're visiting outside June–August. Many Richmond pubs stop kitchen service between 15:00 and 16:00 on Sundays, so the 13:53 lunch slot at Cocotte sits comfortably within the safe window — no need to rush from the viewpoint. The walk from Cocotte to Richmond Park is the longest leg of the day; the Star and Garter Hill path offers a quieter approach than the main road if you'd like to ease into the park gradually.
